The Seal Colony in Inis Mór - Aran Islands
The Seal Colony is one of the most popular attractions on Inis Mór Island (Aran Islands).
The seals are grey in colour and can often weigh up to 507lbs (230kg). They are calm and quiet. In high tide the seals often hunt for fish such as Salmon and Pollock. They love to sunbathe at low tide in the summer months.
The Grey Seal (irish Rón Glas) is one of two seal species found in Ireland. This seal is known also as the Atlantic seal. They are one of the rarest seals in the world and were the first animal to be officially listed as protected. The Grey Seals are powerful swimmers, they can dive down to 70 meters for food, while holding their breath for up to 30 minutes. Baby seals have white fur and gain about 2kg daily as their mothers milk is 40% fat. Grey seals can live for up to 25 years.
Ireland has a special responsibility towards the well-being of Grey seal colonies, with half the European population found around the country's coast.
